8 WAYS TO RELIEVE BACK PAIN
Visit your Local Chiropractor : Our Chiropractor’s at Better Backs will do a thorough history and examination and determine the cause of your pain and dysfunction. They will then determine what is the best treatment required to get your pain under control and get you functioning 100% again.
MAINTAIN CONSTANT MOVEMENT
A lot of common back pain problems are caused by a lack of frequent movement. Too much sitting or prolonged standing for example, may put extra stress on your spine.
Although it may be uncomfortable and seem counterintuitive, gentle movement, such as walking quite often is a great way to relieve pain.
KEEP A GOOD POSTURE
Especially important for those that work from home, keeping a good posture whilst in front of the monitor is essential. Perhaps you spend 6 hours a day at your desk, maybe 8, or even longer.
That’s up to a third of your entire day spent sedentary, so make sure that your posture supports your back and lower lumbar by keeping your head centered above the pelvis and avoid slouching or craning your neck forwards. Also get up and take frequent, short breaks to walk around.
TOSS OUT THE CIGARETTES
Smoking can accelerate the degeneration of spinal discs, so try to quit smoking if you haven’t already. Tobacco replacement products with nicotine (e.g. patches) can help you transition away from smoking.
LOSE WEIGHT
Excess fat and heavy weight only add more burden on the spine, so shedding a few kgs and your back will thank you for it. Speak to a dietician if you need assistance with eliminating bad habits or to lose weight in general.
COLD TREATMENT
Ice packs tend to be great for inflammation. Apply for 15-20 minutes at a time.
USE PAIN RELIEVERS
If the pain is rather intense, speak to your pharmacist or GP about appropriate pain relief.=
TOPICAL CREAMS
Creams and ointments can reduce inflammation and generate heat or cooling on the affected area. They can give you great relief.
EXERCISE WITH YOGA OR PILATES
When the time is right, your Chiropractor will prescribe ideal exercises and stretches for you to perform.
